Early Spring Fishing With a Rapala (Bank Fishing With Lures)
Early spring can be a good time to start working small minnow-style lures from the bank, and this trip turned into a strong day for a floating Rapala.
I was fishing a black and silver floating Rapala and made one small adjustment to it. I added a pinch-on sinker just ahead of the lure. That tipped the nose down a little and also gave me some extra casting distance from shore.
The setup caught several different kinds of fish. I landed largemouth bass, yellow bass and even bluegill on the Rapala.
That kind of variety is one reason I like trying smaller lures early in the season. You might be looking for bass, but there are other fish close to the bank that will hit the same presentation.
The black and silver Rapala caught more than its share of fish on this trip, and the little split-shot adjustment made it easier for me to fish from shore.

Fish You Might Catch From The Bank In EARLY SPRING
I started this trip trying to repeat some recent bass success around a log with a Texas rig. This time, the bass weren’t interested.
Instead of staying there and forcing the same approach, I changed both the fishing spot and the technique.
At another public park, I switched to a Gulp Minnow rig and finally started catching fish. The bass still weren’t cooperating, but three other species were willing to bite: a longear sunfish, a bluegill and a yellow bass.
That’s one of the realities of early spring bank fishing. You might go out expecting largemouth bass and end up finding completely different fish active along the shoreline.
A small Gulp Minnow gives me a chance to catch whatever happens to be feeding. On a slow bass day, changing locations and downsizing can be enough to keep the trip from turning into a complete strikeout.

Early Spring Bank Fishing Lures (Fishing With Texas Rig)
After catching early spring fish on jerkbaits and Gulp Minnows, I wanted to see whether the Texas rig bite was starting to come around.
For this trip I switched to a Texas-rigged Robo Worm and caught my first bass of 2026 on a Texas rig.
The action continued, and I caught two more bass, finishing the day with five bass total.
Early spring lure choice can change quickly as the fishing improves. A jerkbait may produce fish one day, while a soft plastic worked closer to the bottom starts getting bites as bass become more active.
The Texas rig is one of my regular bank-fishing setups, so catching bass on it again was a good sign that spring fishing was starting to move in the right direction.

Which Fishing Lures Work for Early Spring Bank Fishing
One of the first lures I reach for when bass begin showing up near the bank is a small jerkbait.
On this trip I used a red and gold Rapala jerkbait. My second cast produced a largemouth bass, and a few casts later I caught another small bass.
That was enough to show me there were bass moving back into shallow water within casting range from shore.
Early spring fishing can still be inconsistent, so I’m not expecting every lure to work every day. But when a small jerkbait starts getting hit near the bank, I know the fishing is beginning to change.
This trip also gave me a reason to start thinking about other early spring bass lures, including the Texas rig, as the season continues.

Early Spring Fishing From the Bank (Which Fish Bite In Early Spring?)
You don’t have to catch largemouth bass for an early spring fishing trip to be productive.
I started this trip with a simple float rig along the bank and caught two different species: yellow bass and bluegill.
After catching those fish, I switched to a small jerkbait and tried to find something larger. That part of the plan didn’t work, but the float rig had already shown me what was willing to bite.
That’s useful information this time of year. Early spring fishing from the bank can be unpredictable, and sometimes smaller fish are active before the bass bite really gets going.
If you’re mainly interested in getting some bites, a simple float setup can give you another option when the larger lures aren’t producing.
