TEST 2 How to Catch Fish From the Bank When It’s Hot: Bass & Bluegill Lures That Work

Hot Summer Fishing For Bass & Bluegill (Realistic Bank Fishing)

Hot summer bank fishing isn’t always easy, but that doesn’t mean the fish completely stop biting.

I started this trip trying to catch bluegill and other panfish with a small jig and a Gulp Alive Minnow. I caught a couple of bluegill before getting snagged and deciding it was time to change things up.

Next I switched to a Baby Brush Hog creature bait and started fishing for largemouth bass.

That change worked. I caught two bass on the creature bait before calling it a day.

This is pretty typical of realistic summer bank fishing. Sometimes the bite is slow, sometimes you get snagged, and sometimes changing from a small panfish lure to a bass bait is enough to find a few more fish.

How To Fish Docks From The Bank – Bass Fishing Near Docks

When I’m fishing a dock from the bank, one of the most important things I do happens before I ever step onto it.

I cast to the dock first.

Bass and other fish can be sitting right beside or underneath the dock. Walking onto it too soon can create enough noise and vibration to scare those fish away before you ever get a lure near them.

I like to cast along both sides of the dock and then work the far corners before walking out onto it.

That simple approach worked very well on this trip. I caught two largemouth bass in a short amount of time, including one that was almost three pounds.

If you’re bank fishing around public docks, treat the dock itself as structure before treating it as a place to stand.

When Bank Fishing Feels IMPOSSIBLE (Realistic Fishing From Shore)

Some summer bank-fishing trips feel difficult before you even make the first cast.

I was fishing a heavily pressured public area, so my expectations were already pretty low. Instead of trying to force a bass bite, I used a Gulp Alive Minnow and tried to catch whatever was willing to bite.

I managed to catch several longear sunfish and green sunfish, and I even had a largemouth bass on the line.

It wasn’t an amazing fishing trip, but it was better than catching nothing.

When the bite is bad at a pressured public fishing spot, downsizing to a small lure can at least give you a chance at bluegill, sunfish or the occasional bass.

Sometimes that’s enough to keep a difficult day realistic.

How To Catch Fish From The Bank When It's HOT!

Small lures can be a good option when I’m fishing from the bank during hot summer weather.

On this trip I used an ultralight setup with two tiny lures: a Dangly Tail and a Gulp Minnow.

I caught two largemouth bass along with some nice bluegill and several shellcracker sunfish.

What surprised me was that both bass came on the Dangly Tail. The Gulp Minnow caught other fish, but it didn’t produce a bass this time.

That’s a good example of why I like having more than one small lure available when the summer bite gets difficult. Bass and panfish may both be close to the bank, but they don’t always want the same thing.

If the heat has slowed down your fishing, an ultralight rod and a small jig can still give you a chance to catch several different species.

This is Why I LOVE FISHING With Texas Rigs (HOT Bass Fishing)

A Texas-rigged crawfish is one of the lures I like using when the weather gets hot and I’m trying to catch bass from the bank.

I started this trip with a Craw Fatty on a Texas rig and quickly caught a largemouth bass next to the dock.

After moving farther down the bank, I caught another bass on the same lure.

Eventually that Craw Fatty got chewed up, so I switched to a Crackin Craw and caught one more largemouth bass.

That made three bass on Texas-rigged craw-style baits during a hot-weather fishing trip.

When summer fishing gets tough, I still have confidence in a Texas rig because I can work it around docks, cover and other places where bass may be holding close to the bank.
